An increasing number of reports claiming the drug Fosamax, a bisphosphonate drug going by the generic name of Alendronate Sodium, have the uncanny disposition to incur grave adverse effect to Fosamax users such as osteonecrosis of the jaw. The disease process is caused by an insufficient supply of nutrient-rich blood supply leading to a necrotic bone or deteriorating bone structure. A study was conducted to prove or refute the alleged claims about Fosamax’s relation with osteonecrosis of the jaw occurrences which was published as an article in a Canadian magazine called The Journal of Rheumatology.
The study unearthed vital information that there were 32 reports of ONJ occurrence experienced by patients taking the said drug between the year 2004 and 2006.All of the found cases were said to have taken bisphosphonate drugs. The report also showed that most of the affected cases took the said drug intravenously while 13 of them by mouth. The researchers further discovered that there is a whopping 1.04 per 100,000 Fosamax users less if they were taking the bisphosphonate drug orally. Intravenous administration of the bisphosphonate drug amplifies its drug’s effect compared to oral administration of the drug. The study does not prove, however, how close from acquiring ONJ disease the Fosamax users are at risk to.
Fosamax Litigation has been operational for a long time now. The consolidation of all ONJ cases into a MDL case’s progress is still conducting bellwether trials. But, another rising number of Fosamax cases, the Fosamax fracture lawsuits are still not operational since Merck submitted their motion to the court recently this April.
