House Dances

One hundred years ago, in many small towns and farming communities, the house dance was a common form of neighborhood entertainment. Dancers of all ages, from grandparents to grandchildren, would dress themselves in their best clothes and crowd together in the front parlor or dining room. Local musicians would play the music. The dance caller would organize and direct the circles and squares and waltzes and polkas. Refreshments would be served halfway through the evening.
Thanks to Andy and Paula Hill (photo) house dances have been a part of the Home On The Range Dance Schedule since 2003. In their solar powered house, hidden in the forest about five miles south of Ely, Minnesota, Andy and Paula have a big living room with a wooden floor perfect for dancing. They sponsor the Spring Promenade in April and the Harvest Dance in October.
Anyone who has a suitable living room (or front porch or basement or garage) can sponsor a regularly scheduled Home On The Range house dance. House dances are also a wonderful way to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, and other important occasions. Please call 218-666-5990 for more information.
