It all began in a cabin near Bear Head Lake State Park. In the fall of 1997, coming from the Iron Range communities of Ely and Cook and Chisholm and Tower, a group of friends and neighbors held a potluck dinner meeting to discuss the future of traditional folk dancing in northern Minnesota. Musicians were available. Dancers were available. The only thing missing was some sort of volunteer organization to rent the halls and hire the band and schedule the dances. It was easy to make a decision about creating a dance association. It wasn't so easy to agree on a name. A vote was taken, after much debate, and the Home On The Range Community Dance Association was born. | |
| The first Home On The Range Community Dance (held on January 24, 1998, at the Tower Civic Center) was a big success. Dancers of all ages came from every corner of the Iron Range to fill the dance floor. The first Winter/Spring season included four more dances in Tower before the summer vacation. |

In 1999 Home On The Range expanded its territory by scheduling dances in the communities
of Hibbing, Grand Rapids, International Falls, Virginia, and Aurora. Brimson was added
to the list in 2007.
Community Dances are now scheduled on a regular basis throughout the year. Some dances are held in town halls. Some dances are held in church basements. Some dances are held in private homes and barns. Donations support Home On The Range by helping to pay the day-to-day expenses (such as maintaining and updating the web site) of the association. |
